Pump Dredging and Shoreline Restoration in Florida
Pump dredging is here!
Let's talk about escarpments, dredging and geo-tubes...
Have you ever walked to the edge of a pond or lake and the ledge separating the land from the water is so steep that you were uncomfortable getting any closer to the water? That long, steep slope is what is called the escarpment, which has become unstable and unlevel due to water currents undercutting the banks, moving sediment around and creating a sharp ledge.
You can solve two problems with one dredge: remove sediment that is filling in or changing the shape of the lake or pond and also reinvigorate and reestablish a safer and more stable shoreline.
Dredging is performed in shallow areas with the purpose of gathering up bottom sediments and disposing of them in another location. Rather than finding an expensive, off-site location to dump sediment or attempting to find a hidden area on a customer's property, we can reuse the sediment to create a newer, cleaner and properly graded shoreline.
The process is simple: three types of geo-tube bags are used to create a new shoreline. The pump dredge fills the nylon bags which capture sediment but releases water back into the pond or lake.
The base bag is staked to the shoreline with rope and will create the new base for your shoreline.
2. Additional tubes are placed on top of the base tube and tied into the shore with stakes. The tubes are added to create vertical height and to recreate an escarpment with a proper ratio.
3. The top tube is called the sacrificial tube, because once filled it will be split open and graded to provide a base for a littoral shelf or sod to complete the new shoreline.
4. The sacrificial tube has been open and graded down the slope toward the water and back up the slope to create a cleaner, safer new shoreline. Matting is secured over the graded material to prevent washout and sod is secured over the matting.
