Shoreline Stabilization and Dredging: North Carolina
Shoreline stabilization and hydraulic dredging restores North Carolina community lake.
Preston Village is a wonderful community in Cary, North Carolina. At the heart of this community is a beautiful lake and any given evening will find families outside enjoying their peaceful surroundings.
Unfortunately, during the last year, the HOA realized that their lake did not appear as healthy as it once was. After consulting Dragonfly Pond Works' experts, they learned that excessive buildup had caused shallow lake sections and that wave action had caused a severely eroded dam. Both of these issues result in an unsafe, unhealthy, and non-compliant lake. The typical solution is costly, high-impact dredging by excavator. This would require the lake to be drained and heavy machinery brought in, which could damage the surrounding area.

Example of conventional dredging where the body of water was drained and heavy machinery utilized.
The Dragonfly team understood how important this lake was to the community and worked with community members to provide a creative, low-impact solution. We proposed to use our hydraulic dredge machine to remove the excessive sediment and then re-use the nutrient-rich sediment to correct the erosion that had occurred and complete our shoreline stabilization. This innovative solution would not require the lake to be drained and would safeguard the existing landscape and wildlife habitat. This work would be cost-effective, time-efficient, and allow residents to continue to access parts of the lake and surrounding area during the process.
Shoreline Stabilization Process
Our experienced shoreline stabilization team secures our system of Geobags along the eroded dam. The Geobags will be filled with the dredged excess sediment.
The hydraulic dredge, the Dino 6, easily maneuvers throughout the lake to pump excess sediment from shallow areas directly to the bags secured along the dam where the shoreline stabilization will occur.
Our solution was so low-impact that even local wildlife were not disturbed.
The nutrient-rich sediment is pumped directly from the dredge into the Geobag. The Geobag allows water to escape while keeping the material inside. The bottom, anchor bag, will remain in place to protect against future erosion.
Additional excess sediment is graded over the top of the anchor bag. This sediment will be used as part of the natural landscape in the shoreline stabilization process.
Sod is secured over the graded shoreline. The areas behind the sod have been stabilized and grass will soon regrow.
The restored shoreline looks natural and beautiful. Our shoreline stabilization solution is long-lasting and will safeguard against future erosion.
