Dragonfly Pond Works’ customized stormwater pipe and riser repair solutions ensure Raleigh-Durham stormwater devices are functioning as designed and compliant with local regulations.
If you're a commercial property manager, facility manager, or community manager in the vibrant Raleigh-Durham area, you're likely familiar with the importance of stormwater compliance to meet environmental regulations. Stormwater devices play a critical role in managing runoff and protecting our environment. By adhering to stormwater regulations, commercial properties can avoid costly fines, prevent property damage, and contribute to the well-being of the local environment and community.
Stormwater Systems: Engineered Devices
Each stormwater device component contributes to the system design function, such as stormwater pipes, outlets, inlets, and risers. Non-compliant or improperly maintained stormwater pipes can lead to major issues, like flooding, sinkholes, and complete system failures. Repairing these engineered devices requires specialized training and expertise. That's where Dragonfly Pond Works comes in—a trusted and specialized stormwater contractor headquartered in Raleigh since 2006.

Case Study: Restoring Compliance Through Major Stormwater Pipe & Riser Repair
In this article, we highlight a large, multi-faceted project that required an extensive skill-set to complete. The primary focus of the project was a major stormwater pipe and riser repair to replace a failing outlet pipe within the system. The work included mowing and clearing of the pond, excavating, regrading the site to original condition, outlet pipe and riser replacement, inlet and outlet rebuilds, sinkhole repair, and final stabilization. With our experienced stormwater corrective crews, we completed all of this work in-house, safely, and efficiently.
The steps our corrective team took to rectify the multitude of issues in the stormwater device included:
1. Initial Clearing: The first step in the project involved meticulously clearing the site. We mowed the top and side of the dam, removed established trees, brush, and debris
2. Silt Fence Installation: To prevent sediment runoff during construction, we installed silt fences around the site. Additionally, a rock check dam was placed at the outlet to further catch and manage sediment runoff
3. Riser and Pipe Installation: The next critical phase was removing the old pipe and riser. We carefully constructed a solid base for the new riser, ensuring a stable foundation. The new stormwater pipe was set with compactable fill, and the valve and top were securely placed on the riser
4. Outlet Dissipator: We installed an outlet dissipator pad, which was armored with non-woven fabric and riprap. This ensured effective and controlled water discharge, minimizing erosion and preventing further system damage
5. Inlet Dissipator: The inlet dissipator pad was rebuilt and armored using non-woven fabric and riprap to manage incoming water flow and prevent future issues
6. Inlet Sinkhole Repair: A pipe separation led to a dangerous sinkhole on site which was corrected. We exposed the pipe separation, lifted the sunken pipe, and applied a concrete collar around the joint to ensure stability. We then backfilled and stabilized the work area, ensuring proper soil compaction
7. Outlet Anti-Seep Collar: An outlet anti-seep collar was installed near the face of the dam to further enhance the integrity of the stormwater system
8. Final Grading and Stabilization: In the final phase of the project, we meticulously graded the work areas, and applied seed, straw, and matting to promote vegetation growth, stabilize the site, and improve aesthetics
The stormwater system is now compliant and again functioning as designed. Dragonfly’s specialized routine maintenance programs include system component inspection with every visit. This allows us to ensure the system continues to function as designed and alerts us, and owners, to any potential issues before they worsen and repairs become more costly.
