Enhance Compliance with Specialized Stormwater Bioretention Repair and Construction in Raleigh-Durham
As a commercial property manager or facility manager in Raleigh-Durham, ensuring compliance with stormwater regulations is crucial. Bioretention basins are effective stormwater control measures for managing water levels and removing pollutants. However, without proper maintenance, these basins can become compromised, leading to flooding, fines, and environmental hazards. Dragonfly Pond Works, a specialized stormwater contractor headquartered in Raleigh since 2006, offers comprehensive stormwater construction and repair services to commercial property managers, facility managers, and community managers like you.
Benefits of Stormwater Bioretentions:
Effective Pollutant Removal: Bioretention basins are designed to remove suspended solids, nutrients, bacteria, and other pollutants from stormwater runoff, preventing them from reaching nearby lakes and streams. This helps maintain water quality and protect the environment
Water Level Management: During rain events, bioretention basins manage water levels by temporarily storing and slowly releasing stormwater. This reduces the risk of flooding by providing an effective drainage solution and allowing for natural infiltration into the ground
Natural Filtration: Bioretention basins utilize a combination of vegetation, soil, and engineered media to filter stormwater runoff. As water passes through these layers, pollutants are trapped and naturally filtered, promoting cleaner water and reducing the impact on downstream ecosystems
Improved Aesthetics: Bioretention basins can enhance the visual appeal of commercial properties. By incorporating native plants and vegetation, these basins create attractive green spaces that blend harmoniously with the surroundings, improving the overall aesthetic value of the property
Compliance with Stormwater Regulations: Maintaining a properly functioning bioretention basin is essential for meeting stormwater compliance requirements in the Raleigh-Durham area. By ensuring that your bioretention basin is well-maintained, you can avoid fines and legal issues while demonstrating your commitment to environmental stewardship
Case Study: Raleigh-Durham Bioretention Rebuild
At Dragonfly Pond Works, we understand the importance of maintaining properly functioning bioretention basins. Bioretentions are engineered stormwater devices that require maintenance from specialized stormwater contractors. Landscapers do not have the specialized training to service these systems. Overgrown, neglected, or poorly maintained stormwater systems leave property owners vulnerable to compliance violations and fines.
Our Stormwater Experts were contacted regarding the above overgrown and neglected bioretention in Raleigh. Our assessment revealed poor infiltration, drainage issues, and clogged underdrain pipes due to accumulated roots, sediment, and organic debris. A complete bioretention rebuild was required to restore system health, compliance, and property aesthetics.
1. Tree Removal & Biomedia Disposal: We removed overgrown vegetation and trees from the bioretention basin and disposed of them off-site. Additionally, poor-quality biomedia and sand were excavated and properly disposed
2. Underdrain Replacement: Once the degraded biomedia and sand were removed, all three clogged underdrains were removed to improve drainage and filtration
3. Elevation Adjustment, Grading, & Compaction: We raised the elevation of the basin bottom using a thin layer of old biomedia and clay. Throughout the process, our experienced crew continuously checked elevation levels to ensure proper grading and used a roller for appropriate compaction
4. Installation of Filter Fabric and Stone Layers: We installed separation fabric on the bottom and sides of the bioretention. A layer of crushed stone was placed over the fabric, followed by new perforated underdrains and finer crushed stone
5. Sand and Bioretention Media Layering: Clean washed sand and a 24-inch layer of bioretention media were graded within the basin to facilitate pollutant filtration
6. Vegetation and Sod Installation: To complete the bioretention basin, sod was installed over the graded biomedia. The vegetation helps with pollutant absorption and desired infiltration rates
Bioretention Maintenance and Preventative Measures:
A neglected and overgrown bioretention basin can be transformed into a healthy, compliant stormwater system with the help of our customized stormwater repair and reconstruction solutions. Routine maintenance will keep this bioretention functioning as designed, reducing the cost of the system over its lifespan. At Dragonfly Pond Works, our experienced stormwater maintenance crews possess the knowledge and expertise to effectively maintain stormwater control measures. We provide detailed monthly reports to our clients, alerting them to any potential issues before they escalate, thereby preventing costly repairs.
