Got Erosion?

Coir logs provide erosion control

Coir logs provide erosion control

Coir logs and wetland plants can be an extremely effective control for shoreline erosion.  Whether the erosion is from wind and wave action in the pond or lack of vegetative cover at the edge - the water will eat away at the shoreline causing it to erode.  This shoreline remediation project recently designed and completed by Dragonfly Pond Works in Wilmington is simplistic yet effective solution.Coir logs are woven fibers derived from ripe coconut husks.  This fiber is strong enough to create ropes for ships; yet pliable and natural enough to allow plants to thrive.  The coir logs instantly stop erosion and as the plants grow and their root masses expand, they will form a bond between the shoreline and the coir logs, creating a biological bulkhead.  Eventually the logs biodegrade and become a part of the soil. This method is highly effective, low cost, low maintenance and aesthetically pleasing.  The result is an instant improvement to long-term stability while creating an attractive shoreline, hospitable to desirable wildlife and returning the shoreline as much as possible to a natural state.  Coir logs are an invaluable tool in successful lake and pond management.
