Meet Tony, Dragonfly’s Stormwater Repair Estimator
Tony started in the field five years ago on a stormwater repair crew and is now the repair and reconstruction estimator for some of Dragonfly’s largest projects. Tony utilizes his first-hand experiences and stormwater knowledge to drive Dragonfly’s mission of providing custom solutions for clients based on their unique needs.
Tell us about your background and career path with Dragonfly.
I served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps, from 2005-2009. I moved to the Raleigh area following my discharge. I then began working for a koi pond/water garden company while also running my own landscaping business for approximately 10 years. I noticed Dragonfly’s sign when it was put up in front of the shop. My landlord stopped by one day to see what kind of work Dragonfly did and left my number. The owner called me and offered me a job. It was perfect as I was pretty much doing the same kind of work on a little bit smaller scale. I started out on a non-recurring stormwater repair crew, learning the ropes, and was promoted to a Crew Leader within 90 days. At the end of 2019 the company offered me an estimator position and I took it.
What does your average day look like?
An average day consists of riding around looking at ponds and stormwater systems that need repairs. I figure out the best repair solution and the materials needed to complete the repair. Lots of windshield time and talk radio. I still occasionally drop by work sites if I’m in the area to give a hand in the field.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being outdoors is definitely a plus, but having a job that keeps our streams, lakes, ponds, and earth cleaner makes me feel like we’re attempting to make a difference.
What has been your favorite project?
I like all of the stream restorations that I did. Stream restorations are just a different type of project compared to what we normally do. As a crew we have more of a design effect while completing that kind of job as opposed to strictly following an engineered plan. It’s a lot of fun.

What are your hopes for Dragonfly over the next five years?
I hope we keep growing and expanding to start other branches throughout cities in the Southeast.
What advice do you have for future employees?
My advice is to have a good work ethic and a positive attitude. Dragonfly will teach you everything needed to excel in the stormwater industry.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to hunt, fish, kayak, or anything outdoors really. I live by Harris and Jordan Lake, and the Cape Fear River is close by as well.
